About the artist

Honey Rovit was born in Framingham, Massachusetts and began her formal art studies at age eleven with former student of Auguste Rodin, Meta Warrick Fuller who sponsored Ms Rovit’s first solo exhibition at age twelve. In adolescence she studied at the Art Students’ League of New York with Robert Ward Johnson and Will Barnet.

Ms. Rovit graduated Phi Beta Kappa from The Boston Museum of Art and Simmons College where she was student teacher of Creative Art.

She was awarded a fellowship to Harvard College for an MA but married and continued her studies on a scholarship at University of Louisville in a Master of Arts program during which time she was the recipient of prizes in several competitions: The Speed Museum prize from Judge Phillip Adams, director of the Cincinnati Ohio Museum, for her life-size painting “The Family”; Second prize for the painting, “Gypsy With A Green Wagon” from Judge Lloyd Goodrich, then director of the Whitney Museum ; second prize for a pen and ink drawing from Mrs Eero Saarinen, art critic for the New York Times; and Honorable Mention for the pen and ink drawing “Still” “ for its biting and incisive line,” from Robert Beverly Hale Associate Curator of American painting and curator of drawings at the Metropolitan Museum of New York. As part of the masters program at the University she studied sculpture with Edgard Pillet, visiting artist from Paris who remained a devoted friend and mentor until his death in2000.

In Louisville, Ms Rovit exhibited at the Speed Museum, The Jewish Art Center and the Burgdorf Gallery. In New York, Peter Agostini sponsored exhibitions of her pen and ink drawings at the Greer and Fulton Galleries and sent her to Joan Mitchell, who arranged a similar show of drawings on the rue de Seine in Paris, France where she was attending the Academie de la Grande Chaumière.

After a hiatus to raise three children, she was ordered back to painting by Lloyd Goodrich and received a Max Weber scholarship in painting at the Art Students’ League of New York to study with Morton Kaish and X Gonzalez.

In 1982 and 1984, in Paris, she assisted the sculptor Diego Giacometti with plaster models for the chandeliers for the Picasso Museum and Monsieur Giacometti arranged an exhibition of her drawings at the Loeb Gallery. Edgard Pillet, founder of l’Ecole D’Art Abstrait, sponsored an exhibition of her drawings and terra cotta sculptures of her Old Women of the Luxembourg gardens(“Les Petites Vieilles de Paris”) at the Centre Culturel.

From 1985 to 2001, Ms Rovit lived in Paris and Norway, also exhibiting at the Galerie du Musee, The American Church, The American University, The American Center, The Salon d’Automne, Beaubourg,and Nato Headquarters in Stavanger, Norway.

Sixteen of her Family Paintings were selected for exhibition at the National Jewish Museum in Washington, D.C. in 1999.by director Ori Soltes, who resigned before the opening. The paintings and a simultaneous drawing exhibit at the Susan Conway Gallery in Washington, remained unexhibited.

From 2002 to 2008, Ms Rovit lived in Vermont where a solo exhibition of her drawings, paintings and sculptures took place at the Southern Vermont Art Center in Manchester, Vermont in April of 2004.

Her work has been in the collections of Bryna and Louis Untermeyer, Ralph and Fanny Ellison, Isaac B. Singer, Anais Nin and Hugo Guiler, Dr, Inge Bogner, Edgard Pillet, Norman Jackson(I.M.Pei partner in charge of the Louvre Pyramid), Nato, Pascal Le Brun-Cordier, The Speed Museum. Anne-Sophie Torp, M, Vidar Jacobsen, and others in the U.S.A., France, and Norway.

She moved to Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn, New York in 2008.
